When atmosphere carries a game

When atmosphere carries a game

April 7, 2026 · Anna Keller

We talk a lot about systems and progression, but sometimes a game wins purely on mood. Hollow Tide is my proof. Its mechanics are light — tap, drag, observe — yet it's one of the most memorable things I've played on a phone.

The flooded town does most of the work. Every room tells a quiet story through objects and sound, and the puzzles exist mainly to slow you down enough to notice. That restraint is the whole design.

Playing it with headphones at night transformed it. The dripping water, the creaking wood, the distant gulls — it builds a place you want to linger in even when there's nothing to solve.

Not every game needs deep systems. Some just need a world worth sitting inside. Hollow Tide reminded me of that, and I'm grateful for it.
