Can real-time strategy work on a phone?
Real-time strategy and touchscreens have a rough history. Precise selection and fast orders don't love fat fingers. So I went into Ironline Command expecting frustration.
Instead it worked, and the reason is restraint. The game gives you a handful of squads, not an army. With fewer units, the tap-to-select and drag-to-move controls never get overwhelmed, and you can actually read the battlefield.
The slower pace helps too. You're encouraged to pause and plan, which turns the limited scale into a strength. Holding a supply line with three stretched squads is genuinely tense.
It's not a grand strategy epic, and it shouldn't try to be. By staying small, Ironline Command proves the genre has a place on mobile — as long as designers resist the urge to cram a desktop game onto glass.
